Welcome to the Castle!

castel-de-falgonFrom Falgons Castle we want to welcome all visitors to our website.

Falgons Castle, located in a natural setting between Pla de l’Estany and La Garrotxa, with construction data dating back to the 8th century, is a square building with four towers facing the cardinal points, typically medieval and dated in the 13th and 14th centuries. But what makes it special is its good state of preservation, which allows us to relive the rooms of everyday life in the Middle Ages.

The second Sunday in September of each year commemorates, with a historic cavalcade, the offering of the relics of the martyr Sant Ferriol in the temple of Falgons. Legend has it that the Knight Guillem Galceran II of Cartellà, nicknamed “El Comte Desperta Ferro”, in the 13th century offered the relics, brought from Sicily, to the temple of the place where he was born. The Castle participates in the festival as the starting point of the cavalcade (procession) to the temple. Visitors can take part, enjoy the wonderful scenery and lunch of the popular rice paddy, in the shade of lush nature.

On this same website you can find a brief historical and legendary summary of the castle and the characters that have inhabited it for more than a thousand years. We apologize if any historical inaccuracies have escaped us, but we assure you that both Falgons Castle and its characters have a lot of legend to complement the story.

It is now necessary to mention again briefly “El Comte Desperta Ferro” (Knight Guillem Galceran II of Cartellà), a historical figure of the thirteenth century, of a life full of adventure, war, politics and power, which invites us to the legend and let your imagination run wild. On the one hand, Mª Mercè Homs, a historian from Girona, is one of the most renowned specialists in this character, and we know that she is preparing an extensive biography of him. On the other hand, Jou Ramírez, from Lloret, a graphic designer, publicist and delightful illustrator, has made a comic, recreating Guillem Galceran’s adventures in Falgons, where he was born and lived in the 13th century. .
